A seminal study conducted in the 60s and 70s found that young kids who could delay gratification turned out more successful in school, received higher test scores on their SATs and were better able to cope with stress and frustration when they became teenagers.
Apparently, delayed gratification is an intrinsic quality. Whether you can delay gratification or not can be clearly seen in children. Just check out this way-too-cute video:

These kids, especially their faces as they wrestle with eating the marshmallow, are adorable. What about your kids–do you think they would eat the marshmallow or not?
