Why celebrate multicultural children’s books?

Despite census data that shows 37% of the U.S. population consists of people of color, only 10% of children’s books published have diversity content. With Multicultural Children’s Book Day, co-creators Mia Wenjen from pragmaticmom.com and Valarie Budayr from jumpintoabook.com are on a mission to change all of that. Their goal is not only to raise awareness for the kid’s books that celebrate diversity, but to encourage more of these types of books in classrooms and libraries. Another goal of this exciting event is to create a compilation of books and favorite reads that will provide not only a new reading list for the winter, but also a way to expose brilliant books to families, teachers, and libraries.

Multicultural children’s books are not just for multicultural and non-white children. Please check out our article 10 Reasons Why Parents Should Read Multicultural Books to Kids to learn more about how reading multicultural children’s books with your child benefits all children.

If you are looking for some great multicultural books to read with your child, we review them every month in our Multicultural Books section. What’s even cooler is that there are many bloggers participating in Multicultural Children’s Books Day by reviewing a multicultural children’s book so please be sure to check out everyone participating!
