My Attempt at a Bento Lunch

I am not a very creative lunchbox maker. Although I wish I could cultivate a sense of simple pleasure in making my kids’ lunches everyday, I tend to approach making lunches as an obstacle in the way of my sitting on the couch at night and relaxing. (I always make them at night as I am sure I would run out of time in the morning.)

With extra time on a Sunday night (and admittedly feeling a little half-assed about my girls’ lunches after combing lunchbox ideas on pinterest–pinterest is great at making your own attempts at all things crafty or culinary look substandard), I decided to try to do something fun and bento-esque (but I pause to even associate my B-grade lunch in the same class as Bento, cause it’s not even close). The only thing my kindergartner wants to eat everyday for lunch is rice with seaweed, thanks to sitting next to her Korean friend Chu-Hee at lunch and developing lunch envy. It’s made her lunch thankfully straightforward for weeks now. Before lunch would usually always come home uneaten, no matter what I tried. Combing her love of seaweed and rice, here is the most creative lunch I have made to date:

It was pretty simple with dried seaweed, a strand of seaweed from seaweed salad for the mouth, caviar cheeks (that cheap kind you can buy in supermarkets—at least here you can) and carrot eyes.

The girls were SO excited when they saw it, they squealed and kept opening and closing the container to take a peak at it.

What’s been your most creative lunch? Do you make creative lunches everyday (and put my one attempt to shame)?
