Why I Chose to Raise Muslims Kids when I’m not Muslim

“I wish I could eat pork like Eryn!”

It’s a harmless statement really. My four-year-old wishes a lot of things. She wishes she could have a dog and a monkey, she wishes she could “buy” a princess (I explained to her you can’t buy people but left the discussions of slavery and human trafficking for a later date), a certain dress or a stuffed animal. Sometimes she wishes she could be other people or have other family members. But something in this statement felt a little like sandpaper on my skin and I couldn’t at first pinpoint why.

The month of Ramadan just finished—a time of spirituality and fasting from sunup to sundown—and I tried to fast like I always do but didn’t succeed beyond one day. The maximum I have fasted is 12 days, which made me feel like a superstar. But when you think Muslims are fasting for 30 days, my sense of accomplishment dwindles. The thing is, I’m not Muslim so I don’t even have to fast like my husband looks forward to doing every year. But I try—not because my husband wants me to (I had to put that up front as that’s what most people assume)—but because I like the holiday spirit it creates in our household, the togetherness. Our household has two sets of beliefs but each of our traditions is part of the same family canvas, blending seamlessly like a watercolor painting.

  1. Islam is a lie and I feel sorry for your children because, they are going to grow up to be extremely intolerant and hateful towards all non-muslims!I should know….. because,I am an ex-muslim myself!!!I bet your children hate their grand-parents!!!

  2. If you thought islam is about love, put islam to test by asking your husband to adopt some of xtian or buddist or hindu practices and beliefs. Love and compassion is about accepting others the way they are, and not about accepting only those who comply to your demands and sing to your tune.

  3. If ur kids and husband is muslim, SO BE MUSLIM!! come on, at the day of judgement, u will be sorry, be a muslim NOW life is ur chance

  4. The above comments are very embarrassing to read, Islam is a religion of tolerance and love, its biggest misfortune is the people who misrepresent it on a daily basis, there is alot it has to offer and rather than making silly judgements about it read up a bit and educate yourselves, if you cant say anything nice then dont say anything at all. Well done on you the blogger for being open minded and tolerant.

  5. Hi. I am in a similar situation and need your imput. I’m so conflicted about my relationship with a Muslim guy that I love. If you have time, please email me.

  6. I’m a Christian and love my christian roots,I am confused, I am told to love everyone but hate muslims, but love Jews who hate me. And muslims and Jews religion is similar to Christiaty. But we are to hate each other but show love to everyone.

  7. I am the child of a Christian mother and Muslim father. I can tell you it has caused so much confusion and conflict for the children. I chose to be a follower of Christ and now my relationship with my dad is affected. Have you thought about how you are raising your children? How will you bring up Christians if according to Islam, it is your husband’s duty to raise your children as muslims? Think of the children please and most importantly, their souls! Please marry a person who believes the same as you to bring glory to God and not to cause distress to your children. Kind regards, from a child of interfaith marriage
